Preparing Your Sandblasting Supplies

Preparing your sandblasting supplies is not as tough as you think. Wait ‘til you do the actual job of sandblasting the object you want to work on. It’s going to be a messy project indeed. But once you’re done, undressing that piece of metal or wood for a fresh new coat of paint or just wanted to resurface and remove the dust and dirt, the results will pay off. The key to sandblasting an object is to be very careful and avoid breaking it to prevent even further damage. So before you learn about the actual steps to sandblasting, you should first prepare your sandblasting supplies.

There are a couple of sandblaster parts that you should know first before you continue on with the project on your own. The very important sandblasting equipment that you will need is the blasting media. Of course, how can you sandblast an object if you don’t have the blasting media? This is the machine that will allow you to sand that piece of wood or even metal to turn it to looking brand new. While you can easily purchase this equipment at your local hardware store, you can also consider just renting the equipment. If you’re not going to make use of it on a regular basis, why not just rent one? If it’s just for a solo project, you can definitely save a lot of money just by renting one. You can ask your friends or go to your hardware store that lends machinery and work tools and compare the prices.

On the other hand, you will also need an air compressor. See, the thing with sandblasting is that it works by using air pressure quickly to sand an object. Aside from that, a sturdy and stable table top or sandblast cabinets is important to hold your object. These cabinets come in various shapes and sizes depending on the size and shape of the object you’re sandblasting. You can ask your local hardware store if they also lend such cabinets. If not, perhaps you can find some piece of cabinet at home that you no longer find use of.

Now, it’s important that you prepare the items for your protection too. Since sandblasting will leave dust all over the place, including you, make sure to prepare your face masks, gloves, and even ground cloth. It’s also important that you wear eye protection such as work goggles or work glasses to keep the dust from getting into your eyes. Make sure to cover the surrounding areas with cloth or tarp. This will allow you to save time later on when you’re done with the project. It will be easier to clean up.

As part of your sandblasting supplies, make sure to prepare buckets, paper towels or workshop towels, and perhaps fillers to fill the imperfections of your wooden object. You can also make use of sandpaper to do a final sanding for the perfect piece. When you’re ready with all the supplies, it’s time to sandblast the object.
